BLESSED • SISTER OF SOCIAL SERVICE • MARTYR

1899 ~ 1944
Sara Salkahazi, the talented teacher, writer and journalist enters the Society of the Sisters of Social Service and starts out on the spiritual journey of vowed religious life that leads to a profound inner transformation and a keen social awareness. As a social worker, community leader and organizer she serves the poor, the marginalized and the oppressed. This ministry culminates in the ultimate sacrifice when she gives her life for the persecuted Jewish people she wants to save during World War II. The Sisters of Social Service saved more than 1,000 lives during the war. Sister Sara, the woman of great courage and integrity, was a shining light in a dark period of our history and as such she continues to be a prophet and an example for our present troubled world as well. Let us be inspired by her pilgrimage from cigarette smoke to a fragrant sacrifice dedicated to God.
